LISTEN: “Drifting” by ON AN ON

The great songs just keep pouring in this week.  Here’s “Drifting” from Minneapolis trio ON AN ON off their upcoming sophomore album (out this summer).  I’m not a stranger to this song though.  Last year, I first heard this track from the Red Brick Songs “Red Album”; “Drifting” emerging as my favourite result of the publisher’s up-north songwriting retreat, and a song I’d later declare as one of the Best Songs Of 2014.  Fact is, right now I’m already thinking about adding this version to my Best Songs Of 2015 list.

Can I even do that?  Well, there’s no rules to writing this blog other than to make sure I’m telling you about great music.  This song sure does qualify.

The song is “inspired by falling asleep behind the wheel and trying to forget unforgettable things” and was recorded (with the album) at the famous Sunset Sound in Los Angeles with legendary producer Joe Chiccarelli (Spoon, White Stripes, The Shins, My Morning Jacket).  I like this recording, featuring a few more background elements and instruments, along with a new drumbeat that leads us out of the song.  It’s still haunting hearing singer Nate Eiesland’s “Gotta get out” appeal (at 3:00).
