Your song shall be Stacking Up Reasons by Buildings Breeding.
It looks really cold out there today. So I’m spending most of my day indoors inside listening to Donovan Woods and going through old text books that I kept from university. Maybe I thought I’d one day need them for reference….. anyone want a five pounder titled ‘Production and Operations Management’???
Anyway, I can’t tell you where he came from originally, but I know he lives in Toronto now. Or at least thats what his myspace page says. Donovan also lists his influences, which I do hear pieces of Ryan Adams and Bob Dylan in his music, but Jay Z or Nas? Maybe on some long lost EP I’ve never heard. Most of his songs that I’ve come across (on the Hold Up, set to be released on March 27th on Sunnylane Records) featured Donovan‘s soft voice, a guitar and maybe some other form of accompaniment like a banjo.
Take a listen to Virginia Firm and He Drinks Gas (don’t be misled by there title there. I initially thought a song with that title might sound a little more like metal or something….).
If you are looking for more, dig deeper and download some older ones at Donovan’s page on Two Times.
Head on over to Stereogum and take a look at the video for Knife by Grizzly Bear. I’m not going to even try and figure out what the hell is happening here, but at one point I thought Captain James T. Kirk would come into the frame fighting that lizard thing…..
**it will take some time to load.
Happy Birthday Wavelength.
I touched on this before, but I thought I’d mention it again. Its been seven years since this institution of the Toronto music industry has been around. Wavelength is a Sunday evening music series and a zine that has continually tried to “breathe some life into some of the darker corners of Toronto’s perpetually overlooked indie music scene“. They’ve help launch the careers of bands like Broken Social Scene, The Constantines, Peaches, and The Hidden Cameras. This weekend (starting tonight) they celebrate 350 shows in the series by putting on 4 nights at 4 different venues. Check the links for more info.
Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun.
I was never good at remembering details and I never excelled at history in school. So I had to look up what the word Charlemagne meant. Apparently, some dude who conquered half of Europe. Charles the Great they called him, or the Father of Europe. Now he shares his name with two bands that I’ve found on the net. One band from Philly who are really amazing at boring me. Another, a great outfit from Hamilton and the focus of this post.
Was again turned on to a solid band by an Easy Tiger who had brought them to play here in Toronto a couple weeks ago. I’ve heard their new EP (Deadlines, released on Jan. 22nd) and its solid all the way through. They pull off a mix of soulful rock with heaps of raw energy shovelled on top. If you like the Constantines, you’re probably going to like these guys as well. Good fit on a bill with Tokyo Police Club or Matt Mays, as the band have added those opening slots to their resume.
I love the fact that under the ‘homepage’ link on their myspace page, it links to Sting. I wonder if he links back…?
Check out the title track off Deadlines. Really makes me want to see five kids pull this song off live…. wait! Toronto show at the Shoe on Valentine’s day (as well as other Ontario dates in the coming weeks). Another track for ya? Ingest Oh, The Boss Is Coming.
