After posting a cryptic cartoon for fans last week, Alvvays today released the excellent strum-n-thrummer “In Undertow,” a breakup fantasy that is both crushing and charming for its level-headedness. “You find a wave and try to hold on for as long as you can, you made a mistake you’d like to erase and I understand,” sings Rankin, her voice full longing, not for another person necessarily, but for what to do next. “Meditate, play solitaire, take up self-defense,” Molly continues, laundry-listing some strategies for moving on. “What’s next for you and me? I’ll take suggestions,” she deadpans under crashing waves of Farfisa and feedback.
It’s been another great year for new music, 2014 did not disappoint at all. This post is always my favourite one to put together, the problem is always trying to keep the number of songs down. I settled on 50 tracks (listed here in playlist order, not a ranking) that rocked my year, take a look below and agree, disagree, discover of just hit play. As usual, I did my best to make these playlists on soundcloud, spotify, rdio, youtube and this year on Dropmark (which I use for saving videos). For those who like to watch your playlists, try out my collection.

This band has had an incredible year! They’ve been touring non-stop to support their highly received self-titled debut album, which no doubt will start popping up on some of those “best of” year end lists in the coming weeks. I’ve always (no pun) noticed how fast their Toronto shows become sold out, like their upcoming date at the Opera House on the 20th. Did you forget to get tickets?

Here’s the official music video for “Archie, Marry Me,” from the self-titled debut Alvvays album, out now on Polyvinyl (US) / Transgressive (UK) / Royal Mountain (CAN). Lead singer/guitarist Molly Rankin said of the video shoot: “…we made another super-8 video, one where we take ‘take the plunge’ to the logical extreme. The camera exploded at sea so we neutralized the black battery goo with vinegar and kept shooting. My hasty retreat via doggy-paddle was left on the cutting room floor.”
