Well, I’m 17 days late on posting this best of July playlist, but better late than never! Check out new music from Francis & The Lights, Grouplove, Jagwar Ma, PAPA along with IMF newcomers Dom Zilla, Cassius and Klangstof.
Take a listen to “Tonight” by Dom Zilla, taken from his sophomore EP ii.
Dom started making music from his bedroom in Newcastle at the age of 12. Honing his skills he quickly began making a name for himself on the local hip-hop scene, and at 19 his beats were being used by artists such as Raekwon, Skinnyman and Fallacy.
With a change in musical direction, Dom Zilla saw underground success and critical acclaim producing and co-writing for Lulu James – a heady fusion of her soulful vocal tones juxtaposed against his warped electronic textures and sparse beats.
Using keys, light switches and doors closing to add depth to the electronic foundation, Dom’s joining the ranks with Jon Hopkins, James Blake, J Dilla etc as pioneering a new form of electronic music with a subtle urgency.
New to my radar is London electronic artist Dom Zilla with his song “The Shallows”. He’s known lately for his success and critical acclaim producing and co-writing for Lulu James, juxtaposing her soulful vocal tones against his warped electronic textures and sparse beats. Here the focus is solely on him with this first track from his second EP. “The Shallows” features a building electronic soundscape, lyrically about looking back on a relationship, then looking to the future with a realization that ‘you can carry on’ alone.
