Land of Talk – the Montreal-based band led by Elizabeth Powell – has announced its first new album in seven years, Life After Youth, set for release May 19th on Saddle Creek. Produced and mixed by John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth) and Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes), and featuring Sharon Van Etten, Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Sal Maida (Roxy Music/Sparks), and The Besnard Lakes, the album is a collection of songs that sees Powell in the finest voice of her career, and reuniting with original Land of Talk drummer Bucky Wheaton. Take a listen to stirring first single “Inner Lover”, “a beautiful ode to self-determination“. Powell says, “‘Inner Lover’ is a song about self-determination, self-love, self-ownership. It’s about the freedom to live, and love as one chooses.”
Considered to be one of Austin, TX’s best up-and-coming young artists, here’s Emily Wolfe with a track from her debut record Director’s Notes. Her album (which I’m looking forward to hearing) is rooted in folky-pop melodies accompanied by a unique, soothing vocal quality, and polished with catchy lyrics about the ups and downs of young love.
Check out “Lion Heart“, vocally similar to Land of Talk’s Elizabeth Powell, musically similar to Broken Social Scene.
Way too little time spent on the blog today, but smiling out of the office knowing I could post this. Here’s a great collab between Land of Talk‘s Liz Powell with Sam Roberts, off Sam’s upcoming album “Collider” (out next week on Zoë/Rounder Records). Look for the band on the road starting May 16th, dates below.
Check out “Longitude“.

A big thanks to Laura for the tip on The Barr Brothers.
They’re a band from Montreal made up of Brad and Andrew Barr (founding members of Boston avant-rock trio The Slip), in collaboration with harpist Sarah Page and bassist Miles Perkin. The results is aself-produced, self-recorded labor of love. A ten song album written in Montreal in a city full of strangers, lovers, old ghosts and new friends, and recorded in a makeshift studio in an old boiler room at the foot of Mount Royal. Also performing on the record is Elizabeth Powell from Land of Talk and Emma Baxter.
I’m excited to hear the full-length. So far, I’ve just been able to hear a few on their homepage. “Beggar In The Morning” stood out for me the most, definitely recommended for fans of Avett Brothers (I and You and Love).
