Stuck inside while this winter storm rages. If you’re thinking it’s unlikely you’ll be leaving your confines to trek through the snow anytime soon, have a listen to Empire Air. The indie duet is a side project by Daniel Romano of the Welland, Ontario pop-punk act Attack In Black (2007 NXNE Favourite New Indie Release), and East Coast singer/songwriter Allie Torrance.
You may pause at the idea of listening to a side project of a pop-punk group, but if you’ve ever listened to the Evens (Ian MacKeye’s side project) you’ll have a solid idea of what to expect out of this venture… and it’s not particularly punk like.
The duo have yet to release enough music to create a record, but they have posted a video (below) for their cover of the Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra song Some Velvet Morning. I also recommend checking out the track Ballad of a Windy Lady on their MySpace.

Went out for my brother’s birthday this past Saturday. Landed at the Drake hotel in the midst of an interesting mix of artists.
Stop Die Resuscitate were opening with the launch of the video for their track Bad Night (check the tune out on their MySpace Page here). It sounds like Buck 65 mixed with TV on the Radio. Fun stuff, I do recommend. You can also check out some of their remixes here, check out the VitaminsForYou – Flesh Python and Apostle of Hustle – Haul Away remixes in particular.
Sta might be an unknown to you, unless you read the article about him in Now magazine last week, or you keep up to date on Marine Parade’s newest artists… or you hang out on zShare downloading remixes randomly. He got his start by recording a remix of the Timbaland track Give It To Me, and has been catching the eye (and ear) of big names like Adam Freeland, the Chemical Brothers and Crystal Method. His latest release is a remix of the theme song to the show In Living Color. Hey if it can help make J-Lo famous, why not a skinny white kid from Ottawa?
Last up was Montreal’s Nu Ravers On The Block… I’ll save stuff on them for another time…
Mark Szabo has been a part of the Vancouver indie scene since the early 90’s. He appeared on a recording with Carl Newman, Blaine Thurier, and Dan Bejar of the New Pornographers, under the title Thee Crusaders back in 1992. He was a founding member of Good Horsey, and Capozzi Park up until they played their last show in March of 2002.
Now, after 5 years away from the stage, his song writing is now being brought back into the light of day by former Capozzi Park comrade Marcy Emery (also of Choir Practice), along with Bejar and others under the title Heartbreak Scene, and their just released album The Szabo Songbook, on Fayettenam Records.
The fact that such indie-pop luminaries as Bejar and Newman promote Szabo’s song writing is impressive, but it would do more for those of you reading this post if you actually listened to some of it. So I suggest you check out some of it, either by listening to Alibi and Love Outside Movies here, or alternatively for those of you who are opposed to downloading music, check out the Heartbreak Scene Myspace page.
Perhaps it comes from the prairies. The flat land’s expanse across the horizon, like a golden ocean under a blue sky. Introspective thoughts often emanate from such broad perspectives. So, apparently, does solid music.
The Blood Lines hail from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and following the impressive impact of their eponymous debut release, which landed them a gig touring with the Dears, and then playing the Beijing (as in China) Pop Festival, they’re now working towards a 2008 album release.
When I say working towards, what I mean is, they’re posting new, unreleased, demo tracks weekly on their MySpace page. They’re hoping for feedback to help decide which tracks they cut and which they keep, so help them out by heading to it. Personally I’m a fan of We’re All Getting Old and On My Way Back Home.
P.S. – Check out the comments for their China tour video. Thanks for the link Chris.
