Finding a way to describe a band gets tricky sometimes. When hear music that sounds very instrumental and symphonic I think soundtrack. Or dream like. As I sat in the the humidity at the Harbourfront’s CIBC stage watching the Hylozoists perform, I wasn’t losing myself dreaming in the music. In fact, the more I listened to the band, every single dream that I had the night before came back to me in their complete entirety.
The Hylozoists are a 10-piece instrumental group based out of Toronto who use instruments like multiple vibraphones, glockenspiels, pedal steels and strings to hammer out intertwining melodies and choruses. The list of collaborators is long, featuring members of Cuff The Duke, Broken Social Scene, Hidden Cameras and Weakerthans.
Check out Straight Is The Gate. Details at Five is also a nice one.
