You know I love to post about Chicago band A Lull. Here’s one of their tracks off Confetti called “Some Love”, which I stumbled across at Nylon today (go there for a download of the track).

Please forgive the extended break on the site. Canada celebrated Simcoe Day yesterday, I felt like staying away from the blog and putting all my work aside.
While I had stepped away, I got an e-mail from A Lull‘s camp, with a new track to share called “Pot Luck”. The song comes from Confetti Reprise; a sort of outtakes EP from the bands’ full length album Confetti. When making the album, they choose only those songs that they were thoroughly satisfied with – and then realized that the album was 20 minutes too long. Emphasizing song flow over all other factors, four songs were eventually removed but Confetti Reprise gathers these extra pieces in one place. Look for that EP out Aug. 16th.

Since first hearing this new song by Chicago’s A Lull on the forkcast today, I’ve had this crazy urge to want to see this band live. ”Water & Beasts” is filled to the brim with percussion, instrumentation and melodies with a killer ending. Looks like we’ve got another standout here (along with “Weapons For War”) on their upcoming debut LP Confetti (out next week on Mush Records). Stream below, download it at P4k.
A Lull is the result of Nigel Evan Dennis, Todd Miller and Mike Brown hashing out music ideas in basements, bedrooms and practice spaces all around Chicago over the past two years. Believing that everything has a place in a recording, A Lull include sounds of percussive instruments against a wall, churning cans full or garbage and beer bottles with a broom stick, hitting drums with microphones, recording unplugged electric guitars with extremely sensitive microphones, everything DIY. After more than 50 songs were written, the band began the live show near the end of 2008.
The band released its debut effort, Ice Cream Bones EP, which was a compilation of the four songs that were the closest to a finished state at the time and that made sense together. A good intro. Now, here’s their follow-up. Grab the single “Weapons For War” (below) and keep an eye out for the upcoming full-length album, Confetti.
