a million years

I’m guessing that you know by now that I recently got married, as the site has been a little dusty for over a week (honeymoon) and I took the liberty of using Indie Music Filter as a way of sending a love note to my future wife on the wedding day.  Well, I’m almost done with the wedding posts, so hang in there if you’ve had enough already.  This post is about the song that Tara and I danced our first dance to.

Last year while talking about which song that would be, we identified two sort of front runners.  “Hoppipolla” by Sigur Ros (which is by far one of my favourite songs) and Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s uke cover of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”.  We moved on from the former, as we wanted a song that our guests would be able to hear and understand the lyrics to.  The latter sort of disqualified itself as we had been to another wedding where friends had chosen that song as theirs.  This was all around the time I was really getting into the self-titled solo album from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros frontman Alex Ebert (or Alexander).  Track 7 is this beautiful song called “A Million Years”, which is all about falling in love and “finding that girl”.  Many times while hearing this song together, in the car or at home, Tara and I looked at each and kind of knew this was our sort of song.

After we decided to choose this song as the one we’d like to dance to, I pulled this off magically (see below).

I got the album framed and tried my best for months not to blow the secret.  I surprised Tara with the LP at our wedding rehearsal and she loved it.  Two days later, we danced our first dance to it, singing along as our guests looked on.  Now when I hear Alexander’s song “A Million Years”, I’ll go right back to that day and to that dance.

This post is my chance to thank Alexander (from Tara and I) for the kind words and for writing a song that is now a big part of my life.
