NXNE ’07 Picks #2: Thursday, June 7th

Ok, I too have spent my time going over the bands listed using my own musical mindset, I’ll just spit out a few thoughts about Thursday…

9 pm:

Diemonds, Bovine Sex Club. If you like 80’s rock in the vein of Pat Bennatar, or Television, or Joan Jett, you might want to check these guys out.
Dirt Farmer, Cameron House (408 Queen) are a bit more down tempo, but if you’re a fan of Frank Black’s work with the Catholics you might enjoy their sound.
The Disraelis, Silver Dollar. They might be about 2 or 3 years too late with their Stone Roses/Joy Division influenced sound, but they’re pretty decent.

10 pm:

Cage The Elephant, The Horseshoe. If you like high energy garage rock, this DIY act from Kentucky will oblige.
Poorfolk, Rancho Relaxo. These guys provide an acoustic/rock mix that sort of subsumes you as you listen. They’re playing with the Wrens, one of my favourite bands from NJ next week, and that only makes me like them more.

11 pm:

The exchanges, El Mocambo. Power Rock Trio… enjoy.
The Easy Targets, Silver Dollar. Another solid garage rock group, their sound is a bit haunting, their track If You’re A Planet on their myspace page is reminiscent of Gogol Bordello’s brand of gypsy punk.

12 pm:

Buffalo Tom, The Horseshoe. I used to listen to these guys when I was way back in freaking Grade School… about 15-16 years ago. God I feel old. They still rock though.
The Mark Inside, The Drake Hotel. These guys blow me away whenever I listen to them. They’re like a cross between blues and punk… and very good. Remind me of Refused from Sweden.

1 am:

Adam Franklin & The Bolts of Melody, Reverb. Adam used to be the front man to British shoegaze legends Swervedriver. He’s done solo work under the name Toshack Highway, and has released 6 albums since Swervedriver called it quits in ’99. Very, very talented.
Chinese Food, The Hideout (484 Queen W). Country influenced Rock by a band that sounds like they listened to the members of the Travelling Wilburys a lot.
