Toronto based artist RALPH is an alluring pop enigma. Drawing from her disco and synth-laden roots, as well as her personal musical heroines Sade, Stevie Nicks and Donna Summer, her rose colored alt pop brims with a perennial sense of adolescent love. On the strength of her debut self-titled EP — and standouts “Cold To The Touch” and “Tease” — the budding star (née Raffa Weyman) has tracked over 10 million Spotify streams to date.
Today, the fast rising force returns with her latest single + video “September Fades.” As lush as it is drenched in nostalgia, the slick after-hours anthem brilliantly pulls from her retro-leaning ear, anchored on funky guitar flourishes and glitchy synth work, all the while retaining her undeniably contemporary melodic spark.
The clip was filmed in a 1950’s Toronto motel that came up during the rise of “moto hotels” depicting the prime rainbow pastel colored retro-modern landscape for RALPH’s latest smooth & soulful bop. Directed by Gemma Warren (Vérité, Joseph of Mercury), the visual follows four different rooms and four different stories in the “Evergreen Motel,” depicted in the song’s lyrics. Each take gives another unique glimpse into the relationships and lives of the characters, offering a fly-on-the-wall narrative to a typically private locale.
