Small Black have announced that they will embark on a North American tour this summer with Heavenly Beat. The band will visit Boston, Toronto and other major Canadian cities, Chicago in the Midwest and Los Angeles and the West Coast before returning home to New York for a headline show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on June 30.
To celebrate, the band have shared a new single, “No Stranger”.
“Free At Dawn” by Small Black, from Limits of Desire. Directed by Yoonha Park, the video was inspired by Hollis Frampton’s experimental film from 1970, Zorns Lemma. In Frampton’s film, which is part of the Criterion Collection and available to watch online, the alphabet appears letter by letter and is then slowly transformed into representational images. Similarly, Park’s video establishes structure by flashing the letters that make up FREE AT DAWN, and setting with first person point of view footage crossing the Brooklyn Bridge. The video develops the quality of a tone poem as the rigid spelling structure dissolves into abstract imagery.

-Toronto’s Neon Windbraker are set to release their first EP tonight at Rainbow Palace (213 Augusta Avenue)in Toronto, via the most interesting music delivery method I’ve heard of in quite a while. The band will give away 10 homemade meat sandwiches, 10 homemade vegetarian sandwiches and 30-40 pieces of fruit that come with a download link to their first EP. Here’s the event details.
–The Seedy Seeds have a new record called Verb Noun,available on the road at up coming tour dates and via select record stores and online outlets within the coming months. The Cincinnati trio are continuing crafting their own brand of folktronica, ‘blending elements of electronica with the typically analog sounds of banjo, strings, and vocal harmonies’. –The Verge Awards have made this nominees for this years’ prize, Tegan & Sara, Stars and Arcade Fire lead the way with a few nominations (via Exclaim!).
