“Wiser” by Vancouver’s Old Man Canyon from the Phantom & Friends EP.
Last month, it’s safe to say that I got seriously hooked on Brighton band Phoria. “Emanate” was my first introduction to the band, a song which I kept playing over and over from my April playlist. The band are now back with single #2 off their upcoming EP (Display, out June 16th via X Novo).
Check out “Undone”. First listen in, I’m a fan. We’ll see if this one can top “Emanate“.
Break the fine china, because Kelp Records is celebrating their 20th anniversary! Conceived in 1994 in a basement in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and named after the pulpy seaweed that populates the province’s south coast, the record label has spent the last 15 years planted in Canada’s capital of Ottawa. Helmed by the towering and unassailable Jon Bartlett, the label’s twenty years has seen spirited highlights with 20-ish bands and artists (including The Acorn, Jim Bryson, New Country Rehab and Measha Brueggergosman, to name a few), 76 releases and endless DiY tours and events around the world. Most recently, Kelp has grown into Kelp Music, branching out into management (Measha Brueggergosman, New Country Rehab, Andy Shauf, Evening Hymns), among other artist services.
Kelp are bringing the party to Toronto this thursday.

I put together a post and playlist for Breaking Rocks, an online sweater/t-shirt/backpack company with some very interesting designs. Check out my post here, or stream the playlist below.
This is a post that I put up last week at Aux, on the band High Ends.
When I spotted this track in the subject line of a press release, I thought it was going to be a cover. Turns out it’s an original, from an artist you should get familiar with: High Ends.
You’re probably already familiar with the band, even if you’re not yet aware of it. High Ends is Yukon Blonde’s Jeffrey Innes, who, in the second half of 2013 had free time to explore this adventurous songwriting outlet while back home in Vancouver.
“I initially wanted to do something that was really collaborative, so I wrote a bunch of songs with the idea of bringing friends in,” says Innes, in a statement. “But all of my friends were on tour, so I ended up doing it myself.”
Using an array of analogue synthesizers, Innes had a feverishly creative burst of unfiltered solo experimentation, resulting in a 10-song album. The record was recorded with producer Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, the New Pornographers) at his Vancouver Island facility with Gold & Youth drummer Jeff Mitchelmore handling percussion, Ladyhawk’s Darcy Hancock on guitar and Louise Burns and New Pornographers’ Kathryn Calder contributing backing vocals.
