“Friends Hurt” by Vancouver band We Are The City, from the album Violent.
Violent is not only an album, but also a companion feature-length, foreign-language film the group collectively wrote, cast, directed and scored, alongside Amazing Factory Productions. They’ve recently announced that the film will be screened as a Perspective Canada Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival this month.
Set in picturesque Bergen, Norway and shot over 13 days, Violent’s story revolves around the film’s young protagonist (Dagny), who, in the midst of experiencing a catastrophic event is remembering the five people who love her most.
Playlists are up! Here’s what I thought was the best of April 2014 on Rdio, Soundcloud, Spotify and Youtube. This month, look for songs from Inky Jack, Prides, Diana, JMR, Sylvan Esso, Nightbox and many more.

Now in its 32nd year, CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK is just about set to begin. Spanning 5 nights of performances with 1,000 showcasing bands at more than 60 live music venues in downtown Toronto, there’s going to be a lot of great things going on this week for music fans. As mentioned in this contest post, there’s a ton of great artists performing this week including City and Colour, Ellie Goulding, Tegan and Sara, Neko Case and the The 1975 to name only a few. I’ll be trying to check out The Dodos, Breton, ASTR. There’s still a bit of work for me to do to make my full schedule, but this year since teaming up with Do416, I can now show you at least most of my show picks with this great gig calendar (or image below).
See you at the shows.
I’m starting off my week listening to Toronto artist Beta Frontiers and the song “So Cold”, featuring the vocals of Carmen Elle (DIANA, Army Girls). Toronto’s Beta Frontiers was born in Michael Butler’s living room– a home studio experiment in electronics that bubbled over into an arpeggiated assemblage of countless influences. Following the encouragement of his close friends, he wrote and recorded his first EP featuring the haunting pop anthem “Hondo” w/ Becky Ninkovic. Since then, Butler backed Phèdre on tour as well as stirring up a stream of remixes.
The track will be available for download on May 6 via iTunes/Bandcamp, check out “So Cold (feat. Carmen Elle)”.
