Some of the best stuff going on in Toronto this summer happens down at the waterfront, and its free.? This weekend, The Harbourfront Centre presents “Beats, Breaks and Culture“.
Today, there will be DJ’s playing all day, tonight the big show is Montreal’s electronic trio Plaster opening for Edmonton’s infectiously danceable Shout Out Out Out Out.? That is going to be one huge outdoor dance party….
Tomorrow’s an Upper Class day, performances by The Cansecos, The Russian Futurists and another Edmonton native, Cadence Weapon.

Remember Blow Up?? Let me describe it. My all-time favorite DJ night in Toronto, took place at Lees Palace for 10 years from ’95. The best of best indie rock with a heavy British influence. It was a shame when Davy Love closed its doors in 2005. Since then, he’s started a vinyl only record label here in Toronto called Magnificent Sevens.
As a way to give lesser known bands (with really good singles) some exposure, Love has been able to release 45s for bands like The Easy Targets, Action Makes, The Mark Inside and Lipstick Machine. I really like the look of the records, 60’s feel with purple and orange stripes on white.
If you are in Toronto this weekend, head over to their official launch party this weekend.

Action Makes ? Easy Targets ? Lipstick Machine ? The Disraelis ? The Hoa Hoas ? Barons & Lengthy ? Terror Lake ? The Visit ? Mein Blues ? Obviously Five Believers

I’ve never seen a record label before record a song about itself and make a video… awesome. Check out Haligonians Tyler Messick (guitar/vocals) and Andy March (drums) from the record label Youth Club. But this post will focus on the band behind the label, The Museum Pieces.
The band was formed in 2003 and since have put out a couple discs (full length, 2 eps) since. After releasing the critically acclaimed LP ‘Philadelphia‘ the band started Youth Club Records, home to Sharp Like Knives, Special Noise and The Ghost Bees. Think music jumping between folk-rock and post-punk, ‘while maintaining a baladeers approach to liricism and songwriting’.
Head to the bands myspace page to hear some songs, Stayed Too Long (which you can download) is dark and moody, Eye Of My Mind‘s chorus will stay in your head for weeks…. Click here to download It Keeps Me Up (video).
Think I’ll be catching this guys when they play the Virgin fest on Sept 9th.
I think this is the first time I’ve written about a band from Prince Edward Island on my blog. What took me so long?
Two Hours Traffic began in 2003 when four PEI Chemistry students got together and started writing music. After releasing an intial EP (The April Storm), Joel Plaskett noticed and offered to produce the groups first full-length album. Tons of play on CBC, tv placements in The (late) O.C. and succesful touring with Wintersleep and Cuff The Duke all worked together to bring this band to the top of the Canadian Maritime pop revival. Think alt-country on a third date with power pop.
The new disc is called Little Jabs, comes out next month. Its good, really nice. Check out Stuck For The Summer (video). Realy like New Love on their myspace page as well… (waiting to see if I can get that one up here as well…)
