Don’t you love this song?
In The Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel.
Perfect for this moment right now.
Goodbye summer, howdy Autumn. Happy 30th Mike.

I got an e-mail recently from the Musebox, one of the dominant hype machines who enjoyed e-hitting me up twice everytime they’ve got some music to share. I liked what I heard from the last one.
The band is Now It’s Overhead from Athens, GA. A couple things. Think dark layers and moods, lots of guitars. Created by Andy LeMaster, recording engineer (Saddle Creek, Bright Eyes) and multi-instrumentalist. Impressive credits for this guy.? He’s worked with a list that includes REM, Drive-By Truckers and some dude name Chris Martin (I’ll have to look that one up….).
I’m a big fan of the track ‘Let Up‘. You can stream the whole record here as well.
One thing I’m not a fan of is creating more unnecessary space on myspace (maybe that’s what it is for). Check out thier site, and their ‘top 8’. Eight fictional accounts set up to create a larger picture. I wonder if Tom knows about this….
To finish off the Toronto Film Fest last week, I dropped by the Drake Hotel to catch a great lineup of Toronto bands. Without intending to take away from two great openers that night (The Coast and The Diableros), I’m writing this post about the latest incarnation of By Divine Right. We saw Jose Contreras (lead vocals/guitar) backed by 75% of The Meligrove Band.
Which is something you don’t see very often.
Fresh from the road, one couldn’t ask for a tighter band to help you satisfy an excited crowd. I know that it didn’t take many practices for these artists to get it down together. They have worked together before, Jose acting as a producer for some tracks of the Meligrove’s most recent album on V2.
It was the first song on the encore that really got me. Some track I’ve never heard before, but then again not many people have. Its a song that Contreras wrote while on the road (2004 North American tour) and finished this spring. Its about falling short of yourself, being lonely and wanting to go home.
Please, enjoy the song ‘You Know Who‘ by By Divine Right. Its beautiful.
I started looking into Secret City Records last week while after having a conversation with Justin from the label. It’s not only the home of Montreal’s Patrick Watson, but also a new home for an interesting project called Miracle Fortress.
Dig.
Solo project of Think About Life‘s Graham Van Pelt (He’s the really white guy in the band). Opening slot booked for Islands during the Pop Montreal festival in October.
Dig.
As the majority of Miracle Fortress‘s songs sound like somewhere in between Postal Service and Wolf Parade, Graham’s got a sibling project on the go. Self described as ‘essentially Miracle Fortress with (even) less concentration and effort,’ it has a real soundscape feel to an interesting silent film, or something along the lines of BSS’s predecessor KC Accidental.
Check out the track ‘Eschatology’ by Miracle Fortress. I had to look it up, but it means the branch of theology that studies the end of the world.
Continued from previous post.
Thursday lineup… I was looking for something really interesting. Something that might help me overcome my hangover.
Enter Plaster. They were booked to DJ in-between sets, but Magneta Lane cancelled so these boys from Montreal took the slot. A three piece born in 2001, their goal was to create live ‘electronic music using standard jazz instruments.’ Think about a cocktail that is 3 equal parts jazz, jam band and DJ.
They’ve got an interesting audio player on their website. You can choose a song, then choose which musician will play. When you have a specific musician turned off, they just look up and kind of stare at you all weird. You might have to check it out to understand what I’m saying. I feel my description abilities are lacking and I’m close to falling asleep.
Check out their myspace page. ‘Would You’ is an interesting one. I hear this as an Austin Powers montage, or something along those lines.
