Matt Mays: anyone ever been on tv?

I was in a commercial in high school for a product called Game Genie. It’s a device that people bought for their Sega Genesis gaming systems that would help beat hard levels, get infinite lives, etc. Along with 80 other grade 10 students from my high school, we were picked up in a bus with the now classic line ‘hey buddy, want to be in a commercial?’. My first experience with The Pusher.

The commercial was kind of lame when I remember it. But fun I guess. Fondest memory of the night was when the food table was pillaged.

This picture just came across my desktop.

I’ve been listening to Matt Mays for a couple years, ever since I heard the song ‘City of Lakes‘. I suggest you go check out one of his live shows if you like a sound that crosses between Tom Petty, Neil Young and Blue Rodeo. He’s coming to Toronto (from the East Coast) for Canadian Music week, but apparently sticking around longer to shoot a video for ‘Time of your Life (’till you’re dead)’ off the new record ‘Matt Mays and El Torpedo’.

You can listen to this record all the way through, its solid with some classic gems in there. If you can find them, check out ‘Stand Down at Sundown’ and ‘What Are We Going To Do Come The Month Of September’,

Original Recipe

I saw a guy last night in St. Clair station puke right into one of those new recycling stations set up in subways. Of his three potential options (glass/plastic, newspaper, and litter), he soaked the newspaper container with the darkest brown liquid vomit I’ve ever seen.

We’ll not since Kansas in ’72, but that was a different time, different place…

oh no, I opened this post with a puke story, and I said I wouldn’t do that…. often.

Music:

Original Recipe is the collaborate effort of Dean Williams and Steve Mason, from San Fran to Toronto, spanning 2004-2006. Together they scour crates of old records, finding interesting sounding and unique samples as ingredients. They take these ingredients and bake really tasty musical appetizers, entrees and desserts.

Every track on this site has its own definable set of hooks that draw you in. Normally, if you find hooks in your food, you send them back. In this case, I’d hold on to the record.

You can stream the record from the website here. I like tracks 1 and 9, ‘Painted Ladies’ and ‘Big Tesuque’.

Bush

There are so many great Bush videos circulating the Internet.

I like this one here.

Its amazing where people discover new music these days.

I seem to keep hearing good tunes in commercials. I’ve gotta give credit to some amazing people working in the advertising industry. They’ve helped launch successful music careers for musicians who deserve the attention.

Remember a Sony BRAVIA (televisions) commercial where 250,000 multi-coloured ‘superballs’ were released down two steep streets in San Francisco. Visually stunning commercial, nice piece.

The Artist is Jose Gonzalez. The song is “Heartbeat”, click here to check it out.

The French Kicks

‘One More Time’ was the first some I heard from The French Kicks.

Like the Walkmen (who the band shared a label with and toured together), this band originally came from from Washington, D.C. but really started their sound in New York. Everywhere I look on the web, everyone used the same line to describe them “post-punk aggression and mod melodies and harmonies”. I would say take the Strokes, slow them down a bit, and warm their guitar sound. Then add romantic vocals.

Great live band as well. On two occasions I witnessed lead singer Nick Stumpf command a room with confidence. Like the crowd wasn’t even there.

I’m a big fan of the song ‘Only So Long‘ which is on their myspace page. Diggin deeper? Head to the video section of their website, check out this great slo-mo video for ‘The Trial of the Century’.

Yeah, you come to mind…
